Hypertension (high blood pressure) medications

Don’t stop prescription drugs without consulting your
doctor. Stopping some hypertension medications suddenly can be
dangerous. Sudden discontinuation of beta blockers, such as
metoprolol and atenolol, can precipitate heart attacks. Abruptly
stopping clonidine can cause severe rebound hypertension. If
discontinued, these drugs should be tapered gradually over several
weeks.
