 Aspirin and NSAIDS

By Brian M. Carty, MD, MSPH

Updated 4/30/08

Aspirin, taken to prevent heart attack or stroke. Here is a warning about taking the aspirin with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Naprosyn (naproxen) and Motrin (ibuprofen). The NSAID can cancel the beneficial effect of the aspirin unless you take the aspirin ½ hour before or 6 hours after you take the NSAID. It's probably best to avoid NSAIDs altogether if you are taking aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease.
